HAHPERD SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS 2020-2021

It is with great pleasure that HAHPERD has awarded two college scholarships for the 2020-2021 school year.

Reina Yamashita

Ms. Yamashita graduated from Kaiser High School in 2018. She currently attends the University of Hawaii – Manoa Campus as an undergraduate majoring in dance. This is her second year of receiving the HAHPERD Scholarship. She says that ultimately, her goal as a teacher is to share her love for dance with all of students and want students to develop a strong and positive mindset towards dance.

Maria Houar

Ms. Houar graduated from Seabury Hall in 2001. She currently attends the University of Hawaii – Manoa Campus as a doctoral student majoring in dance. Her aim is to make contributions to her local dance community and university by bridging cross-cultural connections between Hawai’i, India, and other places where she has taught. It is her hope to foster and build these connections so that future generations may find ways to experience the potential for shared global movement knowledge to transform the world, as we know it.

2020 HAHPERD Teachers of the Year

HAHPERD is excited to recognize the following outstanding educators as 2020 Hawai'i State Teachers of the Year (TOY). Please join us in congratulating Dara Tawarahara and Jessica Adkins!

Dara Tawarahara, 2020 HAHPERD TOY for Elementary Physical Education

Dara Tawarahara, who is affectionately known as "Ms. T" by her students, serves Helemano Elementary School as an inspiration and positive role model for physical literacy. As a Physical Education teacher and coach, she encourages all students to develop a strong foundation of movement and positive self-esteem that supports healthy and active lifestyles. Dara's student-centered approach is inclusive of all students and connects with their diverse needs and interests. She regularly motivates students through the use of guiding questions, music, technology, and opportunities for self-assessment. Dara advocates for healthy students and healthy schools, which led to increased brain breaks in class and improved recess opportunities. By improving students' access to recess activities and equipment, students are more ready to learn in class. Her efforts boosted school faculty morale and healthy living through an after school wellness club and staff wellness challenges. Dara contributes to the broader community by volunteering and participating in state and district opportunities, such as Children and Youth Day and fitness events. She also shares her engaging lessons with educators beyond her school by opening her classroom for observations. Mahalo, Dara, for your outstanding contributions to Physical Education!

Jessica Adkins, 2020 HAHPERD TOY for High School Physical Education

Jessica Adkins serves Maui High School through her leadership as a Physical Education teacher, department head, and coach. Jessica intentionally designs her lessons to help students from all backgrounds and ability levels to succeed by developing social and emotional learning, positive student interactions, and discussions where all perspectives are valued and respected. Jessica empowers students to develop their voice through her courses, which includes a Unified Leadership Physical Education class. With her guidance, the Unified Leadership students organized youth sports days for neighboring elementary students. Jessica integrates the use of technology, such as Google Classroom and heart rate monitors, to enhance her students' learning experiences in Physical Education. She contributes to her community as an active, positive role model by volunteering for youth clinics and fitness days. Jessica also actively participates in the Special Olympics Unified Champion Schools program as a Youth Ambassador Mentor and Head of Delegation and consults with educators within and beyond the state of Hawai'i who are interested in bringing this program to their schools. Mahalo, Jessica, for all you do to support your students' physical literacy!

Maria Corte.

Many teachers showed up for this free event and attendees sure didn't go home disappointed. Dr. Pangrazi's passion and love for the profession was clearly evident before the workshop even started. He personally greeted attendees as they arrived and immediately shared his philosophy when it came to teaching quality PE. He couldn't express enough how important it was for teachers to have a clear set of rules, effective consequences, research-based management strategies, and for PE teachers to make sure they, "do what they love, and love what they do." The future of our nation's health and well being is too important to just phone it in everyday and simply "roll out the ball".

Throughout the day, attendees were given opportunities to participate in a variety of creative activities that get kids up, moving, exercising, and learning. Past SWD TOY and co-presenter Maria Corte also shared many fun team-building games, fitness relays, and fitness assessment ideas including the use of the Gopher FIT-Step Pedometer. The end of the day was punctuated a raffle giveaway where Gopher handed out free equipment for teachers to bring back to their schools. Sponsored by Gopher Sport and HAHPERD, this event was put on by so many caring volunteers for the dedicated PE & health professionals in our state. Special mahalo to everyone from the DOE, HAHPERD, Gopher Sport, Dr. Pangrazi and Maria Corte for all your time and hard work in making the entire week a great success!

Below are some of the handouts from the PE Summit

Hawaii 11-16.pptx

Effective Management and Discipline.docx

Fitness Super Shuttle.docx

Fitness Super Shuttle Signs.docx

Ice Breaker Directions.docx

Rep and Rotate.docx

Rep and Rotate Circuit.docx

Grit Time.docx

Strength On Display At 2016 HAHPERD Spring PE & Health Workshop

Keynote Speaker Leslie Hicks

Strength can be defined as a good or beneficial quality or attribute of a person, organization or thing, and strength was definitely on full display at our 2016 HAHPERD Spring PE & Health Workshop this year.

As a way to experiment with possibly holding a future state conference on a weekday, this year's workshop was held on Monday, February 8 at Punahou School. In a demonstration of their strength, our professionals came out in force, from public and private schools big and small, and even from the outer islands. Those that attended were definitely treated to a thoughtfully organized day that left them both refreshed and ready to take on the challenges facing our profession.

The day started off with the keynote from Leslie Hicks (SHAPE America Physical Activity Council Academic Coach) from Arizona. She spoke of different ways we can advocate for our profession, including joining our professional organizations both locally and nationally, signing up for the SHAPE America #50MillionStrong Count Me In! campaign, and registering in the Let's Move! Active Schools program to take the evaluation and begin the activate and celebrate process.

She also announced that an exciting bill was just recently passed by the US Congress and signed by President Obama in December called the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA). As was explained by HAHPERD board member Angie Miyashiro in last month's newsletter, the bill effectively replaces the term "core subjects" in No- Child-Left-Behind with "well-rounded education" and will now include subjects like health and PE. This opens the door for PE and health to possibly receive federal fundings that were previously only designated for those few subjects labeled as core. While all the fine details of ESSA are still to be ironed out, this bill reflects the hard work and efforts behind the scenes at the national level and further emphasizes the need for all of us to do our part as professionals to continue to flex our collective muscle and continually strive to prove our worth with our students, parents, administrators, and policy makers.

This year's workshop featured a unique opportunity for attendees to hear Mr. Frank Fernandez, principal at Kaimuki Middle School (pictured left), and Mr. Rob Hesia, the Hawaii DOE HPE Ed Specialist (pictured right), speak on advocating for quality PE and health. It was discussed that PE and health teachers need to be an integral part of the school culture. Being a part of that positive school culture is all about commitment and when PE and health are valued by the entire community, they become part of the value system that can drive a school's decision making. It was also shared that effective teachers and leaders need to communicate and establish their values first. Those values lead to a common vision by the school community which in turn guides the practices of the school. The greatest challenge however is in constantly making sure the daily practice supports and reinforces the vision. It is only when the values, vision and practice are in line that we see the positive outcomes for our students and entire school community.

Special thanks go out to Shelley Fey, Yvette Ikari, Bobbie Perry and the entire workshop planning committee and volunteers for all your hard work, creativity, planning, and organization of the day. It truly was a special event!

If you were one of the fortunate professionals able to join us at this year's conference, you definitely did not go home disappointed. The morning started with a moving keynote by Kentucky's own Jamie Sparks. Among his many great stories and ideas, he shared ways we can be powerful advocates for our profession, including collaborating with other teachers, interacting passionately with students and parents, and finally promoting the power of PE and health with our elected officials.
If that wasn't enough, we were honored to have nationally renowned dance instructor Christy Lane join us as a featured presenter throughout the day. Christy, along with her awesome Dare to Dance guest instructors, had an infectious energy that got everyone comfortably moving with a variety of different dances and styles. To top it all off, there were so many quality breakout sessions and exhibitors that it was impossible to find any down time.
Special thanks to Shelley Fey, Yvette Ikari, Bobbie Perry, Jewel Toyama, all the volunteers, presenters, exhibitors and board members past and present for all your hard work in making this year's conference another moving success!

Team-Building Activities 4 PE! #soeasyandfun

“There is no ‘I’ in Team”

“United We Stand, Divided We Fall”

“Alone We Can Do So Little, but Together We Can Do So Much”

“E Pluribus Unum (Out of Many, One)”

“T.E.A.M stands for Together Everyone Achieves More”

As athletes, physical educators, teachers and coaches, we’ve all probably heard or recited many of these kinds of quotes with our students and athletes. As coaches, we preach these values all the time but as PE teachers, do we do the same in our PE classes? Should developing the skills and knowledge of teamwork only be reserved for those athletes of team sports or should all our students be learning them?

One of the catch phrases floating around in education today is the term, “21st Century Skills.” When we hear 21st Century Skills, we often think of learning technological skills like coding, multi-media platforms, robotics, social media and 3D printing. Not too often will you hear someone say that learning key 21st Century skills happen in PE classes. Well, while learning technological skills are indeed important, when you look deeper into what is truly valued by employers today, you clearly see that these skills are actually secondary.

For example, the organization Partnership for 21st Century Skills (www.p21.org) describes one of the four major student outcomes as Learning and Innovation Skills, otherwise known as the 4 C’s. These important 4 C’s are listed as critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, and communication. All these skills involve learning to function as a team member and can be taught through team-building activities.

In a 2013 Forbes article entitled, “The 10 Skills Employers Want in 20-Something Employees,” a survey was give to 200 hiring managers, asking them to list the 10 skills they desire in an young employee. The top 4 skills they desire in a new hire? Number one was the ability to work in a team, followed by the ability to make decisions and solve problems, the ability to plan and prioritize work, and finally, the ability to communicate with people inside and outside and organization.

Even more revealing was an even larger survey of 400 employers conducted by The Conference Board, Corporate Voices for Working Families, The Partnership for 21st Century Skills and the Society for Human Resource Management. This survey entitled, “Are They Really Ready to Work? Employers’ Perspectives on the Basic Knowledge and Applied Skills of New Entrants to the 21st Century U.S. Workforce,” revealed the top 4 skills desired from today’s graduates are professionalism, teamwork, oral communication, social responsibility.

As you can see it's so important to take the time to teach these valuable skills to all our students. You'll find that it's not that hard to do, you can still incorporate fitness into your activities, and your students will have fun while learning valuable team skills that they'll take with them for a lifetime.

HAHPERD Supports the 2015 Keiki Great Aloha Run

HAHPERD members were proud partners of the 2015 Keiki Great Aloha Run. Our members attended the planning meetings, helped to promote the event in schools, coordinated the packet pick-up, manned the t-shirt distributions, and on the morning of Feburary 14, 2015 cheered on the 2,000 participants - keiki, parents and supporters.

This year, $31,500 was raised; these funds will be distributed to 133 public and private schools on Oahu to benefit nutrition and physical education programs. It was a festive morning - with Augie T. as the emcee, young dancers from KES Dance Fitness Team and Dr. Wizard Hound to energize the runners, cheerleaders from McKinley High School to cheer them on, and free admission to the Great Aloha Sports, Health and Fitness Expo, Donna Ede, a Board Member of Kaho`omiki and member of HAHPERD, said "the money generated from this even has the potential of touching over 50,000 school children in the form of: asphalt paint to create game boundaries on parking areas; clothesline and caution tape for make shift nets;laundry baskets to hold balls and equipment; beans and material to make bean bags; and much more. Our efforts help to ensure that teachers won't have to pay out of pocket for these little extras!"
Dare to Dance and 2014 Children and Youth Day with Christy Lane

On October 4th and 5th, HAHPERD proudly hosted dance instructor Christy Lane for a Saturday workshop at Mililani High School then at the 2014 Children and Youth Day (CYD) held at the Hawaii State Capitol on Sunday. Participants in both sessions described Christy as "amazing," "fun," "unbelievable," and "energetic." At both events, Christy taught a variety of line dances that started off so easy that even the most chorophobic (fear of dancing) attendees were still able to learn and keep up. Christy just has a way of breaking down a dance into just a few simple steps and make it fun. As everyone became comfortable, Christy would then encourage some creative movement or show a little twist that the more daring could add to jazz it up a little. Popular line dances like the Electric Slide, the Wobble, as well as country line dances, folk dances, and ballroom dances were all part of the program.
HAHPERD would like to thank Alexis Zoder who helped organize the CYD event, Yvette Ikari for organizing the Dare to Dance event, the University of Hawaii KRS professors and students for your time and support, Mililani High School, Christy Lane, and all the volunteers who came out to help at both events.
Did you miss out and weren't able to catch Christy Lane? You're in luck as Christy has agreed to return to Hawaii in the spring as part of our annual 2015 HAHPERD Hawaii State PE & Health Conference. Stay tuned to hahperd.org for more details!

Hawaii PE Teachers Take SHAPE

"What's in a name? That which we call a rose / By any other name would smell as sweet," may have been true for Shakespeare’s Juliet Capulet, but some members of the health and physical education teachers’ professional association are not so sure. After decades of internal squabbling and dialogue, the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance (AAHPERD) members have voted themselves a new labelundefinedthe Society of Health and Physical Educators (SHAPE).

AAHPERD’s roots go back to 1885, when an ardent group of physical trainers gathered in New York to discuss their profession. These sixty-some leaders of the nascent physical movement formed the Association for the Advancement of Physical Education (AAPE). As the years passed, the name was adjusted to reflect additional specialists. In 1937, Health was included with Recreation and Dance added in 1938 and 1974, respectively.

As the association grew in size, the acronym, AAHPERD, took on an identity all its own. Because of the length and difficult pronunciation of the name, the association struggled to infiltrate society with any noticeable allegiance or enthusiasm. Members knew what the name stood for, but the public, parents, lawmakers, and school administrators never embraced the categorical name or acronym.

Today, with a shrinking membership of 18,000, the Society of Health and Physical Educators will do business as SHAPE America, with a new and equally succinct mission and vision statement. SHAPE’s rejuvenated mission is to advance professional practices and promote research related to health and physical education, physical activity, dance, and sport. Their vision is just as crisp, Healthy People–Physically Educated and Physically Active.

Here in the islands, we have a vibrant affiliate of SHAPE America in the Hawaii Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance (HAHPERD). In 1952, an equally passionate group of physical educators elected Edward F. Chui from the University of Hawaii as president, and a year later, they voted in Donald Gustuson from University High School as their second president.

Today, with a steadfast membership of 350, HAHPERD leaders continue to come from UH as well as our public and private schools. Like SHAPE America, HAHPERD is a non-profit association with parallel missions focused on promoting how to live a healthy, active lifestyle. The focus of HAHPERD’s efforts on all islands is directed to our school-age population. Concerns related to smoking, drug and alcohol abuse, diet and obesity, and sexually transmitted diseases are frequent topics at HAHPERD conferences and workshops.

The organization’s name is getting mixed reviews from health and physical educators across the country who are worried about how the new name will be received. The lockerroom wireless is picking up some skepticism. Perception run wild when one hears that too many think the new name sounds like a fitness magazine or a weight prevention program, and rightly so.

The vibes locally are much different. Lynn Tagami, a former HAHPERD president who teaches physical education at Kamehameha Schools, likes the name because “it is easier to say, remember, and pronounce.”

The name game battles are now a part of the association’s historical growing pains. These internal skirmishes were a result of members trying to protect their name’s elimination from the acronym. Concerns will linger, but Tagami hopes SHAPE America will help unite the profession.

Another sport and physical education stalwart and two-time HAHPERD president, Shelley Kahuanui Fey from Punahou School, gives the new moniker two thumbs up. She says, “I like the way SHAPE is presentedundefinedas a verb as opposed to the noun describing physical aspects of the body.” She intends to begin using it in HAHPERD literature and messages. For example, Shape a future where healthy is the norm, Shape a standard of excellence in physical education and health education, and Shape the lifelong habits of young people. “How about this,” Fey adds, “SHAPE America with A.L.O.H.A.”

Time will tell if the SHAPE acronym can help make the rebranded association more recognizable? While there was never a greater need for a physically educated society, SHAPE America’s ultimate success will depend upon the performance of the professionals themselves.

Let’s hope Juliet Capulet was right.

AAHPERD's New Name is Approved

New Name Approved!

Building on an overwhelmingly positive vote for unification earlier this year, I am pleased to announce that the AAHPERD membership has voted to approve the new name, Society of Health and Physical Educators, doing business as SHAPE America. We are now poised to move forward in creating a new chapter in our 128-year old history with our new name, vision and mission. A new logo, tagline and brand for the organization, as well as a new website, will be introduced early in 2014.

The use of the new name will be communicated strategically to our many audiences over the next six to eight months. Members may see both AAHPERD and SHAPE America – Society of Health and Physical Educators used interchangeably. For instance, 2014 Gateway to Success, our national convention, will remain the AAHPERD National Convention & Expo.

As you all know, these are very exciting times. We are making history together as we “relaunch” our organization to a new generation of professionals. Through our new name we are working to:

Shape a future where healthy is the norm.

Shape a standard of excellence in physical education and health education.

Shape the lifelong habits of young people.

Shape and influence policy related to physical education and school health education.

Having an acronym that actually says and means something helps to make our new name more memorable. In addition, the verb “shape” means influence and communicates leadership and power. We want SHAPE America – Society of Health and Physical Educators to have increased visibility and recognition among our primary audiences of physical and health educators as well as our secondary audiences ─ parents, principals, school administrators, policy makers and the media. I am confident that our strong, memorable and simple new name will help us do just that.

This vote by the entire membership is unprecedented. Thank you all for your support by voting on the new name for your professional association!

Letter from the President

“For time and the world do not stand still. Change is the law of life. And those who look only to the past or the present are certain to miss the future.” –John F. Kennedy

Aloha HAHPERD members and friends,

I hope all of you have had a rejuvenating summer and are excited for the new school year at hand. As a PE teacher, coach, and father, I know we, as health and fitness leaders, often relish opportunities to face new challenges. We often enjoy facing the unknown and seeing the culmination of our efforts.

Don’t we expect the same of our children, students, and athletes? We constantly challenge them to think about their future and to embrace opportunities, both in school and out. We challenge them to change, to go beyond what they think is possible, to take a chance to see what they’re made of. Well, today I’d like to take the time to challenge you as a professional, in much the same way you challenge the young people entrusted to your care.

We are currently at a crucial time in our health and physical activity profession. The research and information is out there for all to see. We know we are headed for a health crisis both in our nation and around the world. We know that physical activity stimulates the brain and that active students learn better. We know that regular physical activity and a healthy diet is linked with living a longer and happier life. We know we have tremendous support in the White House and beyond with the Let’s Move Active Schools (LMIS) and Designed to Move initiatives, among many others. So now is the time to act, while the iron is hot!

This school year I challenge you as health and physical activity leaders to make an impact beyond your gym walls, classroom doors and school fences. I challenge you to sign up your school online as a LMIS school. Use the online resources to improve your school and join other schools across the nation in saying that physical activity and health is an important part of our schools. Attend a HAHPERD workshop and/or conference even if it means giving up a precious Saturday. Volunteer at a HAHPERD sponsored event or attend one of our monthly meetings. Write a letter to a politician advocating for PE and health in schools. Go out and become an advocate for health and physical activity in your school by organizing activities before school, at recess, and/or after school. Visit the HAHPERD website often to stay connected to what’s new and upcoming.

A wise proverb goes that the best time to fix your roof is when the sun is out. Let’s not wait until it’s too late to save PE and health in schools. Remember that the iron is hot and now is the time to go out and make a difference in our local PE and health community. I thank you for all you do each day to help make Hawaii’s keiki both healthy and happy and I wish you all the best this coming school year!

                                                                       Jonathan Hermosura

                                                                        Sincerely yoursJonathan Hermosura

In order to increase the breadth and depth of discussion around coach development, the conference program will reflect two primary tracks:

The Coach Track

Presentations should appeal to coaches at the various levels of sport participation, youth through elite, in the United States. Each session should provide practical application of evidence-based practice that coaches will be able to add to their “Coaches Toolbox” while simultaneously demonstrating the level of activity, skill development and competition. appropriate for the identified level of play. Sessions in this track can be considered continuing education for coaches and should reflect the conference theme of Long-Term Coach Development.

  The Coach Educator Track

Presentations should appeal to sport program administrators or academic coach educators. Considering the conference theme of Long-Term Coach Development, sessions should reflect one of the following: (a) current research on coach development, (b) paths of coach development across sport, gender, and competitive level, or (c) critical topics in coach education. The sessions should provide coach educators cutting-edge information that directly relates to the National Standards for Sport Coaches (NASPE, 2006) and clearly demonstrates how to develop and deliver programs and resources that are beneficial to coaches.

  Means of Submission:

Traditional ways of teaching knowledge and skills can be inadequate and disengaging for today's students. Physical Education is just one field that can benefit from this way of teaching and learning. Learn how two educators have challenged their students to develop healthier habits, promoted fitness in their communities, and extended the physical education experience beyond the classroom for their students Challenge Based Learning.
