    Each year the National Joint Projects Office awards 10 grants to recognize Jump Rope For Heart and Hoops For Heart Coordinators for their passion and contribution to the program. The $2,500 grant supports professional development and provides funds to purchase school equipment.

    2016 grantees will receive:

    • $1,300 professional development stipend to attend the 2016 SHAPE America National Convention & Expo in Minneapolis, MN from April 5-9, 2016. The stipend may be used towards convention registration, travel, lodging and/or per diem.
    • One-year SHAPE America membership (if you are not a current SHAPE America member) and (1) copy of the 2014 National Standards & Grade-Level Outcomes for K-12 Physical Education.
    • $1,200 US Games gift certificate redeemable for equipment to enhance your school's physical education program. The gift voucher will be presented at the 2016 SHAPE America National Convention & Expo in Minneapolis, MN.
    • Invitations to special events where you will meet physical education and JRFH/HFH leaders from around the country.
    • Opportunity to share what makes your program special by contributing toThe Pulse, JRFH/HFH national newsletter.

    The SHAPE America National Convention & Expo covers a wide variety of topics and are primarily research based, incorporating the most recent findings on the how students engage in physical education and activity programs. It is a great opportunity for to develop important contacts with industry experts and to gain knowledge in specific areas of physical education and health.

    Dr. Delores Curtis has established the Undergraduate Travel Fund to introduce students in physical education teacher education to the lifelong learning opportunities of attending conventions of professional organizations:

    1)    learning new ideas for teaching,

    2)    meeting professional colleagues who are resources for exchanging ideas,

    3)    and contributing by sharing ideas. 

    Criteria to be used in selecting recipients of the undergraduate travel fund are:

    1)    undergraduate major in physical education teacher education (pedagogy) attending college in Hawaii – junior or senior level – with a foundation of teaching knowledge demonstrated by a GPA in teaching field,

    2)    interest in professionalism demonstrated by membership in state professional association HAHPERD, and willingness to join national professional organization SHAPE America,

    3)    primary interest in teaching physical education at elementary school level is preferred but not mandatory,

    4)    some teaching experience:

    a.    related to course work, e.g,. observation-participation, student teaching, etc.

    b.    voluntary teaching experience, e.g., after school, summer fun, tutoring, coaching

    5)    willingness to share with peers after attending convention.

    Travel grants will pay for registration fee, travel and housing for:

    1)    2017 SHAPE America National Convention and Expo (Boston, MA)

    Location may make this convention too costly because air fares, registration and housing are more expensive.

    2)    2017 SouthWest District SHAPE America Convention (Albuquerque, NM)

    Location relative to Hawaii may make this convention more convenient and affordable.   Each year the Selection Committee will determine which convention is within financial limits of Travel Fund.

    3)    Applications for the Travel Grant should be received by the committee three months before the convention and the winner announced two months before the convention.

    4)    If no undergraduate student attending college in Hawaii meets the criteria, the Travel Grant will not be awarded.

    Students should be members of HAHPERD, provide letters of support from faculty and/or other professional contacts, and an essay explaining why they are interested in the opportunity to attend a national professional convention.  DEADLINE DECEMBER 15, 2016.  A committee of my choice will select the winning undergraduate student by JANUARY 15, 2017 so the student can meet early registration deadline for convention.  For inquiries or more information, please e-mail  jonathan.hermosura@maryknollschool.org

    To provide financial support to HAHPERD members who give a presentation at an SHAPE America National or District Convention or a Professional national or district convention, HAHPERD sponsors two $500 grants a year.
